The Seven Steps to Aging Backwards

Updated: Jan 28

The conventional model of managing chronic disease does not work. Managing, masking, or dampening symptoms does not make them go away. The only way to make them go away is to heal the disease by finding and addressing all of its root causes. Instead of asking "what" the disease is, we need to ask "why" the disease is. The body is not organized in the way that we conventionally treat it, i.e., into organs with a different specialist for every single body part. Instead, the body is one unique integrated and complicated system. For example, if you have irritable bowel, joint pain, migraines, depression, and acne- these issues are typically treated as separate problems. Each requiring a different specialist and a different medication. When in fact, they are all connected and can be treated by understanding the root cause and optimizing the body's systems.

Most chronic diseases stem from the dysfunction of one or more of the seven major systems in the body. The key to feeling younger at any age and optimizing your health is to support all seven systems.

These systems are,

  • Digestive system and gut flora

  • Immune and inflammatory system

  • Detoxification system (ability to remove waste & toxins)

  • Energy system (mitochondria!)

  • Communication system (includes hormones, neurotransmitters, and more)

  • Transport system (includes lymph & vascular systems)

  • Structural system (includes your cells, muscles, bones, organs, & tissues)

To optimize and increase our health span, we must support all these systems. It's like standing on a tack, you wouldn't just put a band-aid over the tack (that's still in your foot) and pop an Ibuprofen. Well, at least I hope not... No, you'd grit your teeth and pull that sucker out! Similarly if you had two tacks in your foot, you wouldn't just remove one in the hopes that it would lessen your pain by 50%. Instead, you would remove BOTH tacks.

The same is true when treating chronic disease. The only way to make the symptoms of chronic disease go away is to get to the root(s) of the problem. We do this by addressing the seven systems of the body.

In order to maintain balance and discourage dysfunction in any of these seven systems, there are key things to address in each;

Digestive system and gut flora

-Remove things that damage your gut, like processed, sugary, and starchy foods, damaged fats, environmental toxins, unnecessary medications, and chronic stress.

-Add in the things that help to heal your gut, like prebiotic and fiber-rich foods (non-starchy vegetables and whole fruits). fermented foods, probiotics, and L-glutamine.

Immune and inflammatory system

-Reduce the things that cause chronic inflammation, like conventional dairy, sugar, and gluten, chronic stress, toxins, and food sensitives/allergies.

-Increase things that support a healthy inflammation and immune response, like colorful organic quality protein (use code "Siri" for 10% off at Belcampo), lots of healthy fats, wild-caught/low-mercury fish (salmon, sardines, anchovies), high-quality fish oil, vitamin C, and vitamin D.

Detoxification system

-Decrease your amount of toxic exposure by limiting plastics, BPA-lined cans, artificial chemicals, unnatural ingredients, additives, and artificial fragrances.

-Drink plenty of water, sweat often through exercise and sauna, eat cruciferous vegetables, and be sure that you are having consistent bowl movements.

Energy system

-Eat whole, real foods, colorful vegetables, healthy fats, MCT oil, and anti-inflammatory foods to support your mitochondria (the energy-creating organelles in your cells).

Communication system

-Support your hormones and neurotransmitters by eating plenty of healthy fats, limiting chronic stress, increasing enjoyable activities (hobbies, creative outlets, connecting with friends, building relationships).

-Decrease processed and refined foods.

-Add in MCT oil, magnesium, and vitamin D.

Transport system

-Support your vascular and lymph systems by exercising often, sweating frequently, getting a massage, dry brushing, and adding in CoQ10, high-quality fish oil, and L-carnitine.

Structural system

-Support a healthy body (cells, membranes, bones, organs, and tissues) by eating whole, unadulterated foods, moving daily, limiting chronic stress, participating in enjoyable activities, and increasing relaxation.

And there ya have it! Short, sweet, & to the point. Nothing too complicated here. As with any network, you are only as strong and balanced as your weakest system.
